Exciting news!.. APRIL 5TH 2011…
Dave Sheriff has written a song
for Jan…
She is feeling very privileged!
The dance is called 'The Waltz Queen' and the
step sheet is now available..
HERE IS AN UPDATE ON JAN'S
THEN
Her diagnosis is
Breast Cancer HER2 Positive Grade 3.... (aggressive) Diagnosed in October 2010
Jan had 2
operations to remove the cancer, a lumpectomy and removal of the lymph nodes
under her arm
Chemo
started on 17th January after a few false starts because of the infection
which persisted in her second operation site.
The
chemo wasn't as bad as she thought, up until day 3, then it all
started….
Gastro
intestinal pain, colic, chills, altered consciousness to the point of passing
out, 7 kg weight loss in 3 days, peeling gums, sweating, constipation initially
followed by profuse diahorrhea, bile discharge
++ extreme pain in the ankles and
wrists (heat helped) and a general feeling of lifelessness. She is deaf in the right ear and is
experiencing blurred vision.
The Oncologist
stopped Jan's chemo, it was way too harsh for her and would have seen her off
the planet had it continued.
She did lose
her hair, and that was after just one run in with chemo drugs. 5 months later,
her hair is about an inch long all over.
Some of the symptoms are still hanging around,
decreased hearing, blurred vision, digestive problems, tiredness, joint pain.
To add to that,
she now has lymphadema of the right arm. Her Mum
(85!) is her physiotherapist and works on her 3 times a day
and she has to wear a
a lymphadema bandage at
times… you can imagine how thrilled she is about that! (-:
Her current
treatment is iv Herceptin in
hospital, every 3 weeks. A recent echogram of her heart showed
some minor changes
but not enough to stop the Herceptin. (a side effect of Herceptin is heart failure!)
She has also
taken it upon herself to take Essiac, a natural
herbal medicine that is reportedly an old Indian cure for cancer.
One of our
friends in line dance, Judy Heathcote, died in
hospital from cancer a few weeks ago. She was 61 and loved life!
Jan was in the
room nearby having her own cancer treatment at the
time. It was a very sad and depressing time.
Radium therapy
started for Jan on the 14th June. It was so sad watching her drive away from
home, on her way to
Having radium means she was away from home for
6 weeks.. she hated that
idea! She stayed at Charles Wanstall Lodge which is a
an accommodation for cancer suffers, and a 15 minute walk from the hospital
where she had radium
every day Mon - Fri
OCT 2011
Jan is still
coping well and says that although the radium treatment was a bit scary at
times, it was really not so bad.
By the end of
the 6 weeks of radium treatment her boob was pretty well burnt and had holes in
several places.
Those holes have all healed
up now. She still has lymphadema of both the arm and the breast and that is
quite painful
at times… but she thinks she is lucky to have just that!
A recent
mammogram and ultrasound (September) was all clear! Her herceptin
regime continues until about March next year.
Jan has thick
curly hair now and it grows very fast. She has just had her 3rd
haircut!
The class she
took over in Maroochydore while she was having her
radium in
As for me, I am
very glad to have Jan back home again… it’s been a worrying time.
Life is still
good…….Annie
6th
JANUARY 2012 JAN HERE!
Yeeeeehaaaaaaaa! I had my
last treatment today!!
Ok,
so there is still a few appointments with the Oncologist and some regular tests
to follow,
but
basically, I am a FREE WOMAN! (-: OMG!
I can’t tell you how good that feels.
I did have a
scare a few weeks back when another pea sized lump raised it’s
ugly head, but lucky for me,
a biopsy showed
that the lump is not malignant…. but we are keeping a good eye on it!
I am feeling
well and still appreciating having some hair… I’ll never take it for granted
again.
THANK YOU TO
EVERYONE WHO SENT CARDS AND GIFTS AND THEIR VERY KIND GET WELL WISHES.
I HAVE NOT BEEN
ABLE TO GET BACK TO EVERYONE (it’s impossible I can tell you!) BUT PLEASE TAKE
THIS
AS MY VERY
GRATEFUL THANKS TO YOU FOR YOUR ABSOLUTE GENEROSITY OF SPIRIT!
LINEDANCERS ARE
JUST THE BEST!!!
VERY HAPPY NEW YEAR WISHES TO EVERYONE, I HOPE
THAT 2012 IS THE BEST YEAR YET!
